Scarred

He shivered, sheets tangling and sticking to sweat soaked skin… ghosts of the past haunting him.  He whimpered… a tear trickled down his cheek.   Loss upon crippling loss heaped upon him, bowing him with the burden of it.  Scars drawn upon scars, his large heart battered, damaged… but it beat.  Pain and loss had left its mark… had tempered him to an incredible quiet strength in the forge of life.   He’d not let it turn him bitter or cruel or cold.  He’d not let it close his heart, though to leave it open meant more pain, more grief… more nightmares.
