Shattered

He remembered the morning as if it were a dream

Fragmented, twisted, blurred around the hard edges

Smiles smeared into grimaces

Laughter into busted glass and screams.

Crimson, the splash of color in the black and white memory

The sky so bright and clear, a sick parody.

Supposed to be a happy day

Hugs and joy and welcome home

“I missed you so much, son.”

He stretched out his hand

Pleaded and begged

Cried and screamed

But the body grew cold

And sirens screamed

While the sun beat down in fiery defiance

And the boy wept alone

As he said goodbye.
