Persistence for the Win

 The first time he’d asked, she had run out of the flat in tears.

She came back three days later as if nothing happened.

The second time she was gone for two.

On the third, he’d been determined to get an explanation…

 He got a slap in the face.

By the fourth she’d just said no, and asked him not to ask again.

The fifth earned him a glare, the sixth a withering glance, the seventh a sad shake of her head.

For the eighth, he won a smile to go with the refusal

His heart seized at nine… yes.
